Abstract

In EFL settings, metacognition plays a vital role in the learning processes, and teachers is expected to teach their students metacognitive skills in addition to the language. To do so, teachers can provide direct instruction about how the strategies can be used, or take students through each strategy by modeling. Either way students must be given guided practices, wherein they assume full responsibility for completing a task; this entails the strategies of planning, monitoring, and evaluating. In addition, metacognition should be taught through classroom activities that foster reflective thinking and practices.
