CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER’S UTTERANCES INARMAGEDDON MOVIE

Abstract


This study analyzed the conversational maxims, the implied meaning, and types of implicature produced by the main character’s utterances (Harry Stamper). The method used in this study was qualitative research with descriptive approach. Based on the findings, the writer found there were 118 utterances of Harry Stamper that contain conversational implicatures. There were 74 (62.72%) conversational implicatures that violate maxim of quantity, 24 (20.34%) that violate maxim of quality, 11 (9.32%) that violate maxim of relevance, and 9 (7.62%) that violate maxim of manner. Furthermore, the writer found there were 103 types of implicatures, they were; 77 (74.76%) utterances that contain generalized implicature and 26 (25.24%) utterances that contain particularized implicature. Hence, the writer concluded that the main character in Armageddon movie (Harry Stamper) mostly used quantity maxim and generalized implicature. In addition, the implied meaning of the conversational utterances referred to the expression of agreement, refusal, acceptance, denial, command and announcement expression.
